A quick post with a couple of videos of me designing some features pages. To give you some idea of how quickly things move on newspapers, all of these pages were completed in one day, in addition to a pile of other not quite as interesting pages.

There are two videos here which should give you an idea of how features pages are put together.

Anyway, these are the inside pages on Birdsong. I have included that page and a close-up of the headline to illustrate how a simple idea and a couple of quick graphics can really bring a headline to life.

If you friend or follow me, you’ll have seen me posting pictures of pages I have been busy designing in work at Media Wales.

Working at a newspaper we churn out the pages, if I tweeted every time I designed one I’d break the internet so I usually end up posting pages from feature supplements and weekend magazines where I get so show off my photoshop skills.

Sakura and the Spider

Designing a website for Melissa Erwin’s samurai comic Sakura and the Spider.

Having already working with Melissa Erwin on her portfolio website, she wanted a dedicated site for her brilliant samurai comic Sakura and the Spider. Melissa writes, draws, letters… basically produces Sakura from start to finish and she needed a site put together quickly before her next comic convension. So a samurai comic website, basically a dream job… I think the site looks great and we got it live just in time for the convension too.

Melissa Erwin is a talented comic book artist who needed a website.

Melissa Erwin wanted a place on the web to show off her graphic design and art that was all about the work. She also wanted to include a blog. I designed and coded melissaerwin.com with Madamadari to be exactly that using minimalism design principles that make for a striking website that’s all about Melissa’s projects.

Just a quick post to show you the latest video of me designing news pages.

This time it’s a double page spread about the movie Kung Fu Panda 2. And for all you Type nerds out there, check out the on-the-fly redesign on the Q. The reason I did this is that the existing typeface’s Q would not have stood up on the floor, the tail would have sent it off balance and I wanted to words to look like they were actually part of the scene.

A website ro promote the library servicies for the Welsh Assembly Government.

As part of an initiative by the Welsh Assembly Government I worked with Tantrwm to design and code a website that promoted libraries throughout Wales with a particular emphasis on getting young people interested in their local libraries.

LeftSide Winter 2010

This is a selection of pages from the 2010 winter edition of Leftside magazine

LeftSide is a glossy mens magazine that is published quarterly in the South Wales Echo and distributed throughout Cardiff. The mag covers everything you’d expect from a mens publication and is designed entirely by me. I try to keep the design generally simple because is it printed in a small format than standard magazine size. Also, I usually only have a week to put each edition together too, so it just shows you what you can do in a short amount of time

Taking a look at some of the little details that really lift your average news page

I think that once you’ve got the basics design of an editorial page down, everything reads in the right order and so on, the way to really make it great can be by just added a few little details. It could be anything from 3D text, smokey typography or even werewolf gouges out of the page. Anything really that ties the editorial into the main picture to make one cohesive scene works. Here are some on the ones I have designed.

WM Magazine

Some of the pages I’ve designed for WM, a high-end glossy women’s magazine

WM is a high-end glossy magazine published quarterly covering everything from interior design to celebrity interviews with an emphasis of fashion. Unlike a lot of the publications I work on at Media Wales, WM is produced using Adobe InDesign, and of course a lot of PhotoShop. It is a free publication distributed throughout the country, but in terms of quality, its contemporaries are Elle, Bazaar and Cosmopolitan.
