Lots of lovely people said lots of nice things about it. I put the design on Red Bubble where I have been selling designs that deal with general geekery for a while.

This morning I had an email from Red Bubble saying they have removed the design due to a complaint from the the ‘owner of the respective rights’.

I honestly did not realise that the design I made would breach any copyright laws. I assumed that as a piece of fan art it was okay. There are plenty of other Avengers designs on Red Bubble, why was mine complained about?

What exactly is the problem? While I have referenced the characters, the artwork is entirely my own. Is it the fact that I had the word Avengers on there? Is it the fact I was selling it? Can I give the poster away for free?

I have lots of questions and not many answers so I was wondering if any of you could shed light on the matter.

Just for the record, I am a massive Marvel zombie. I love Marvel and always will. I would not want to do something that breaches their copyright but at the same time I grew up with all these characters and have always thought that my drawings of them were fan art.

I actually remember selling a drawings of Spider-man at school. I can’t remember how much they went for, 10p or something, do I owe this money to Marvel?

Your knowledge and opinions would be greatly appreciated and I’d like the publish the result in a more detailed blog later in the week.

With the Avengers movie coming out I wanted to design a poster of the superhero team.

I’ve been wanting to try my hand at a minimal poster for quite a while but have only just now found the time.

Mark Twain said “I didn’t have time to write a short letter, so I wrote a long one instead.” Well it’s like that for me but with posters… you catch my drift.

As soon as I started thinking about the Avengers team and how they could be broken down into simple colours and maybe a few accessories, like Thor’s hammer, I remembered this wonderful poster I’d seen for the Giro di San Francisco bike race.

The poster has been hanging around in the inspiration folder that’s filling my dropbox account to bursting point for a while now. I love the cycle illustrations, they remind me of Tron, and the way in which they are repeated, I knew would work perfectly for the Avengers.

After a quick sketch, at the bottom of the page, on an old letter I was away.

This time it’s a double page spread about the movie Kung Fu Panda 2. And for all you Type nerds out there, check out the on-the-fly redesign on the Q. The reason I did this is that the existing typeface’s Q would not have stood up on the floor, the tail would have sent it off balance and I wanted to words to look like they were actually part of the scene.
