A month or so back I started making videos of my design work at Media Wales.

Why did I do this? Well, aside from thinking the results would look pretty cool, I think a video is the best way to show exactly what goes into designing a newspaper page. Newspaper and magazine design is one of those things that people just don’t seem to get. Sure, those in the know, hacks and the like, have some idea but most people don’t even realise that newspapers have to be designed.

I’ve been a journalist for almost 15 years now. I started off as a reporter, everyone knows exactly what that is, they’re guys with a press card sticking out of their hats asking lots of questions. But designers, people aren’t so sure. Well here it is, this I what I do… write the headlines, pick the pictures, make it look pretty so people will want to buy it. This particular page is the front cover on an entertainment supplement and the lead story is a review of the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

I’ve had a lot of people asking exactly how I made the video. Well, that’s the easy bit. Two bits of free software.

First CamStudio to record what’s happening on screen as I’m working. You can change the settings so it only captures once every second or so.

Plus Virtualdub for a quick bit of editing and trimming.

The best thing about both these bits of software is you can install them on a computer without admin privileges so you don’t have to call IT.
If any of you do make a video of your work, I’d love to see it. Send your links and I’ll post some of the best.

Thanks to Wannabehacks, WalesOnline, ACES and Fleet Street Blues for featuring the video.
